Top Ten Tuesday: Favourite Fantasy Trilogies

I make it harder and just name 1 by every author, or this list will contain exclusively Robin Hobb, Jennifer Fallon & Brian McClellan! Also, it HAS to be concluded and I must have read all 3 books.

Demon Child Trilogy / Jennifer Fallon

Or any other trilogy by the author! She’s one of my all-time favourites and I adore her writing. It’s witty, magical, has the best scheming and court politics and I love the characters! The Demon Child trilogy was the first I read, that’s why it will always have a special place in my heart^^ But I can also recommend the Hythrun Chronicles or the Second Sons Trilogy.

Powder Mage Trilogy / Brian McClellan

Flintlock Fantasy at its best! Definitely real page-turners that have everything you need in a good Fantasy story. And guns. LOTS of guns. The second trilogy is just as good if not even better, but I still have to read the last part of it.

Tawny Man Trilogy / Robin Hobb

This is standing for all the Hobb trilogies, cause I love them all the same! I am really digging those covers, even though I can’t find them anymore and scummy bookdepository sent me the wrong versions 😦

MaddAddam Trilogy / Margaret Atwood

Ok, I’m cheating a little, because this is more of a Dystopian novel. It’s one of the few where the 2nd book is actually the best and the first the weakest!

Mistborn Trilogy

Of course there’s a Sanderson series in my list^^ And another one that got better with every book. The last one is brilliant and I want to re-read it one day.

The Paper Magician / Charlie N. Holmberg

Now this is just too cute! Has a really adorable magic system and a perfect teacher/student relationship that turns into a slow-burn romance. I was very much entertained and want more books like these!

The Winternight Trilogy / Katherine Arden

I loved the atmosphere in this! And even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the last book and the ending it remains one of my favourite recent trilogies. Book 1 is still the best!

Rhapsody Trilogy / Elizabeth Haydon

Now, this is a proper Mary Sue^^ Rhapsody is incredibly annoying because she is waaaay too powerful & beautiful, but I was loving the world and am having fond memories. I read this in my teens and even though I would probably not like it much anymore, it kinda stayed with me.

Honorable mentions – trilogies I haven’t finished yet but believe would be in this list:

  • 1Q84 / Haruki Murakami
  • The Hollow Gods / Rebecca Levene
  • The Poppy War / R.F. Kuang
  • Worldbreaker Saga / Kameron Hurley
  • Kingkiller Chronicle / Pat Rothfuss

What do we learn? I don’t actually read as many trilogies as I thought and most are by the same authors. Also, I got some trilogies still to finish and a lot that I actually finished ended up being average due to messed up endings. YES, Queen of the Tearling Trilogy, I’m talking about YOU^^

  1. Fun list! Though… it’s another reminder that I *still* haven’t read The Bear and the Nightingale even though I meant to ages ago… πŸ˜‰

I’ve seen the paperback of Haydon’s Destiny around, but I never picked up the series. I know what you mean, though, about books that stay with you even if they woudn’t be favorites if you read them now.

    1. Yes! The Haydon trilogy was one of the first adult Fantasy I read an I can still remember bits and pieces and that I thought the world was really big and interesting!

Hope you get to ‘The Bear and the Nightingale’ soon and that you enjoy it πŸ™‚

  2. I’m a big fan of the first Mistborn trilogy (need to finish the second tranche of Mistborn books) and the Powder Mage trilogy (which is even better, and, yes, I too need to finish the second trilogy).

  3. Love what you changed this week’s TTT topic to! As a fellow fantasy lover, I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t read any of these trilogies! πŸ˜… I have read the first 2 books of The Queen of the Tearling trilogy tho, and I actually put it on my list today for series I don’t want to abandon (I’ll leave the link at the bottom of my comment in case ya wanna check it out). But I’m also scared to finish it b/c like you mentioned–I’ve heard there was a lot of mixed feelings on the ending. But at the same time it kinda makes me more intrigued; I wanna know what has everyone in an uproar!

    1. Haha, thanks for your comment! I will check out your blog in a sec πŸ™‚
About Tearling – I thought that most of the book was actually quite decent! It’s really only the ending that is soooo bad 😦 If not the trilogy would probably have been on this list!
