Review: Proven Guilty. Dresden Files 9 by Jim Butcher

The White Council of Wizards has drafted Harry Dresden as a Warden and assigned himProven Guilty to look into rumors of black magic in Chicago. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in the Windy City, but it’s all in a day’s work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob.

SPOILERS FOR BOOKS 1-7!

This is Harry’s 8th case. He is now a Warden. His first case in his new profession is dealing with horror movie monsters come to life who attack people and feed on their fear! But that’s not the only thing – he also has to deal with his friend Michael’s 17year old daughter Molly who ran away from home & needs his help. Additionally he’s still struggling with the demon inside of him and other minor annoyances.

This story is featuring the Summer Knight and his lady, Michael and his family, Thomas, Murphy and other friends & enemies Harry made along the way.

I feel that Butcher is doing a great job of holding it all together! Things that happened in book 3 or 4 play a role again and the cast of characters is getting real big. I enjoy it a lot! Makes the world seem realer and more detailed & the characters become more distinct.

Harry’s righteousness is still pissing me off sooo much, especially in the start where he couldn’t understand that the wizards HAD to kill that teenager. He killed several people and turned into a monster, come on Harry. There was nothing else to do.

I didn’t like the story as much as I liked the case in ‘Dead Beat’. I felt that it wasn’t as straight-forward and had too many side stories. And it was basically just ‘monster is killing people, find out where monster is from’. I also didn’t like the journey into Winter. All the characters have so much plot armour. He gotta have to sacrifice someone or next time I’ll be like ‘meh, they all survive anyways’^^

I had a major issue with Harry lusting after underage Molly. And the fact that the author keeps mentioning it. Yes, he makes it clear that Harry knows it’s wrong to think about a 17year old’s curves and get turned on, but he still seems to hammer it in. Like Bob makes inappropriate suggestions and then Molly ACTUALLY tries to seduce Harry, ugh! Just. Don’t please^^

I checked with a friend who is up to date and she told me that NO, they are not starting any kind of romance or something so I won’t give up on the series, cause I feel like it’s just getting really interesting!

I also have to admit that I LOVE Harry’s dog and I would rather see Harry die than his beautiful, furry & loyal friend!

The lusting and the kinda weak storyline took away some of my enjoyment.

★★☆ (2.5/5)

Still gotta continue! This series has ups & downs but when it’s up it’s so much fun! And listening to it is better than reading.

  1. Oh yeah, that part was truly cringe-worthy, and I have no idea what Butcher was thinking writing this! Fortunately, the series does get better afterwards – not universally better, but generally. Anyway, this was for me the low point of Dresden Files – hope it will be similar for you too!

  2. I read Skin Game back when it was nominated for a Hugo a few years ago and very much enjoyed it. I need to start back at the beginning of the series, especially now that a couple new ones are coming out.
