My name is Kvothe.
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
You may have heard of me.

This is a Re-Read. I’ve read the book shortly after it was published and absolutely loved it. I had only good memories and since so much time has passed & I couldn’t remember lots of details, I wanted to read it again.
And now, this is interesting.
I did not quite love it as much.
Main reason? Denna. And specifically, the last part of the book, e.g. the whole Trebon/Denna storyline..
But let’s start with what is still great! The style of writing & the language are absolutely beautiful. It is a pleasure to read. I’m also a huge fan of the school setting and enjoyed reading about Kvothe’s daily struggles & adventures.
Just as I remember. I could read about Kvothe at the university for ages!
He’s a little smartass & know-it-all, but I still feel for him, as I understand his motivations. He’s not perfect and makes a lot of mistakes. He’s also ambitious, driven and stubborn. Highly intelligent, smart and a god-like musician^^ That’s our Kvothe. I still hate the name.
Now enter Denna.. Her’s and Kvothe’s story are intertwined from the start. And he’s immediately intrigued by her. Mooning and drooling and not finding words to describe her beauty and cleverness & talent.. Oh boy, it gets old pretty quickly! Also, Denna is damn shifty & hooks up with a different guy every night.
But yea, she’s wild and can’t be captured, blabla. Na, she’s leading people on and that’s not cool. I just can’t stand her and there’s WAY too much time spend on Denna & Kvothe going on dates, him chasing her and then the whole last episode.. Could have been much shorter, if you ask me.
I get why Kvothe goes to Trebon, after hearing about the Chandrian. If he was alone, it would have been fine. He figures out what happened. Kills the giant lizard thing & goes home. But with Denna being there it leads to looooots of talking but saying nothing and more episodes of Kvothe drooling over her.
That’s my only issue. I still love the overall plot, I love the story within a story, the many mysteries, the world-building, the little details & the fact that we are reading how one man became a legend & what’s true and what’s false or exaggerated!
I will give the book 4 stars. It’s Denna’s fault it’s not 5^^
