Top Three Thursday: Villains who are better than heroes

hosted by Bookwraiths

This is a really cool topic. I had to think quite a lot to come up with 3 villain MVP’s. It was harder than I thought and most of the characters I came up with first were more anti-heroes than straight out villains. Here are some that fit:

Captain Kennit (Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb)ship of magic

Cheating a little here, as he is a pov character. The book contains a lot of different perspectives though, so he’s not the main character. Just one of them. Kennit is a real baddie, even though he’s trying to make it look like he’s doing the right thing. But he can’t fool us. He’s a manipulating bastard who is never thinking of anyone else apart from himself. I enjoyed reading about him a lot though.

He’s causing a lot of suffering but also pays for it later, like a villain should^^

Jareth (Labyrinth)labyrinth

Maybe my favourite villain ever? He’s sneaky, mean, self-absorbed, likes kidnapping babies and acting inappropriately towards 13-year old girls. But he IS the star of the movie.

And he was my first crush ever.

I don’t know how often I watched this movie. Too often^^

….and then I started thinking about Stephen King novels and came up with a bunch.shining Blaine the Mono was pretty creepy! Randall Flagg is a cool villain and I like the fact that he appears in several novels. But he didn’t overshadow the (anti-)heroes.. Annie Wilkes was the real deal, but too horrible for me.Β  In the end I picked The Overlook Hotel / Jack Torrance, as it/he is a fascinating antagonist and the book is my favourite pure Horror story.

  1. Hm, never thought Kennit was an antagonist. I always saw him as an antihero as well. But maybe that’s because he is the only one actually doing something to get what he wants instead of complaining the whole time. And I was on his side most of the time although he is really self-centered and doesn’t care for everyone except of himself.

But I agree Robin Hobb is very talented in writing villains. Never hated a guy more than Regal in the Fitz Chronicles.

As a villain I liked the Red Queen in the Tearling books… Because she gets a lot of depths in the later books and sure also Walter in the Dark Tower series.
And I hated Percy in The Green Mile.
Or Sadeas in the Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson.
But in general meh I’m here for the good guys. I’m always there for the true heroes.

  2. In Labyrinth, Jennifer Connelly was supposed to be 16, so while not completely addressing that particular issue, it does ameliorate it somewhat. Unless you’re referring to something else Bowie did?
Either way, I too loved that movie. The visuals still amaze me today and especially so since we know there was no cgi involved. Good old camera angle tricks…

      1. I was just going off of a quick wiki search. Haven’t actually watched it in years, so maybe it was something IN the movie? But I thought she was old enough to go out on her own and that was part of why she was so pissed off about staying home?
I know she WAS 16 when it was filmed…

      2. Oh, so the actress was 16, yes? Well, they never really talked about her specific age in the movie, now that I think about it.. I need to research where I got it from.. When I was younger I loved the romantic undertone of it (i mean, the dance scene and him wanting to give her everything & make her his queen?) but now I find it a bit creepy.

Edit: ok, her character, Sara, is 15.

  3. Jareth is an awesome character, villain or no. I love Labyrinth.

I think I’d have to go with Dolores Umbridge for this one. She’s 100% villain, and I think is one of the best written characters in the Potterverse. There’s no excuses made for her, no “oh wait, she’s not quite as bad as it seems.” She’s pure evil, and she is one of the characters that is *still* the most discussed even though she was never the main character of any of the books.

  4. Ahhh, Jareth! πŸ˜€ “You remind me of the babe…” “What babe?” “The babe with the power” “What power?” “The power of voodoo” “Who do?” “You do!” “Do what?” “Remind me of the babe!” *scuttles off to rewatch* πŸ˜€
