I already talked about my favourite book settings & places I’d like to visit in the past, so I decided to do something more Chistmas-y. Here are the movies I love to watch over Christmas time!
Bad Santa
It’s Mr. DZ’s favourite Christmas movie and we have to watch it every year. I watched it for the first time 5 years ago and thought I wouldn’t like it. But I enjoyed it & thought it was funny^^ We tried Bad Santa 2 as well, but both didn’t like it. It was a weak copy of the first – the problem so many second parts have.
Love Actually
I am SO in love with this movie! The airport scene always makes me cry and Bill Nighy always makes me laugh! Such a great concept with all those tiny stories that are connected in some ways. And not all of them have a happy ending. I feel like watching it every year during Christmas Time!
Scrooged
My parents loved this movie so we watched it every year. I used to be a bit scared of all those ghosts when I was little but I always loved the movie as well. And it always makes me cry in the end!
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
If I had to pick my favourite Christmas comedy, this would be it! Never got tired of it, it was tradition to watch it at Christmas! I even watched it twice sometimes – once with my family and then again with my friends from high-school. Fun fun fun!
Home Alone
Another classic! Christmas-y, funny, heart-warming, lots of action. It is perfect! But I never liked the sequel. Or sequels? I don’t even remember whether there is more than 1!
Jingle All the Way
Eh! I actually haven’t seen this one in years but I remember that my brother and I loved it and watched it several times as well. I might not like it so much anymore if I’d try it nowadays. But it still gives me nice Christmas memories when I look back!
Die Hard
Of course it is a Christmas movie! And it has Alan Rickman ❤
Drei Haselnuesse fuer Aschenbroedel
If you are German, you will know that this will run on every channel, non-stop until Christmas 😀 It’s a Czech/East-German adaptation of the story of Cinderella from 1973 and it’s so cheesy and pretty & magical and has the BEST music. Also, the costumes are very classy. We love it!
Rise of the Guardians
This is one of my favourite animated movies and it should be much more popular. It features Santa Claus, The Sandman, The Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost and Hugh Jackman voices the Easter bunny!! Very cute & funny and touching! Watch it 😀
Sissi
‘Sissi!’ – ‘Franz!’
And again.. if you are German you CAN’T get around this movie trilogy. It is an Austrian production from 1955 featuring the wonderful Romy Schneider. She plays the role of Empress Elisabeth of Austria and shows her growing up and becoming a strong leader of her country.
It is so super cheesy and dramatic and just GORGEOUS! I watched it with my mom every year. My dad and brother hated it 😀
Have you ever seen A Christmas Story??

No, I haven’t! It doesn’t sound familiar. Is it worth watching?

Yes, you should definitely watch it! 🙂 It’s my favorite Christmas movie

Home Alone will always be my fav classic Christmas movie and I loved Rise of the Guardians too.

I never understood why people liked Home Alone so much. The family was horrible, the kid was a brat, the robbers were idiots and I could never get the humor.
Thank goodness for Diehard then!!!

Haha, the parents were indeed horrible and the robbers very dumb^^ It’s not a movie that requires you to think a lot 😀

Love Actually is so fun 🙂 Home Alone is something I have to watch every year (though I admit to liking the second one set in New York too 😉 ) And Die Hard is *classic* for this time of year 😀 Gotta admit, not being German, I’ve never heard of Drei Haselnuesse fuer Aschenbroedel- but I have this problem where I kinda have to watch every Cinderella movie… basically this has made me really curious to see if I can get a subtitled version! (probably a bit weird, but whatever 😉 )

Aww I hope you find a version with subtitles!!

Aww thank you 😀 I’ve added it to my watchlist 🙂

Ugh I hate Home Alone haha. 😀 But The Rise of the Guardians is so great and we watched Sissi every year as well when they showed it on the tv. They don’t show it as often these days though which is a shame.

Haha, people seem to be 50/50 on ‘Home Alone’ and I see lots of love for the Guardians which is awesome!
It’s so cool that you had Sissi on TV as well! Our programs are probably very similar 🙂

Great list. I’m checking out the Drei Hazelnuss fur Aschenbrodel on Netflix now…I’ve never managed to learn German, so I won’t understand anything they’re saying, but that maybe won’t matter.
Have a great week.

Thank you! I hope you find it with subtitles 🙂 Awesome if it was on Netflix! I need to see if I find it there as well, although Netflix Australia is not as good as the US version…

Good selection here. Die Hard is my favourite Christmas film. You know it’s nearly Christmas when they play it on TV. Love actually is a close second and should definitely be watched each year 😀

I am waiting for the Foxtel pop-up channel that plays Christmas movies all day & night and every third one is probably ‘Die Hard’ 😀

Wonderful list! I love Love, Actually and Jingle All the Way, even though I know technically that they’re both awful XD Both Sissi and Drei Haselnuesse fuer Aschenbroedel sound really amazing, I’ll definitely have to see if there are any copies with subtitles available.
My TTT this week.

I hope you find sub-titled versions for both! 🙂 They are old but lots of fun and the music is great, especially in Aschenbroedel!

My faves are A Christmas Story and Bad Santa. I like to watch each once a year. However, I have to admit, Bad Santa isn’t for everyone. I’ve yet to see the sequel but noticed it’s on Netflix now.

It’s not really worth it, so don’t have high expectations 😀

You should!! And wasn’t it you who introduced me to ‘Love Actually’? I think we watched it together with ‘My Girl’.

Never seen ‘My Girl’ – Don’t think it was me 😀 although I’m not sure about Love Actually. I watched it so many time with so many different people ^^

I want to see Rise of the Guardians, but haven’t managed to do that yet. Soon, I hope.
My Christmas favorites are sometimes classic, and sometimes a bit odd. I like traditional cartoons (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas) and MST3K & RiffTrax comedy riffs on some pretty bad Christmas movies (Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, etc).

I forgot to mention any cartoons! But I love the Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck Christmas clips and ‘Anastasia’ is a must-see during Christmas time 🙂
Lol, I haven’t heard about those comedy versions yet, gotta check them out 😀

I haven’t seen Anastasia in ages! I own it, just keep forgetting to re-watch it. I love the Muppet Christmas Carol, too. Highly amusing version.

I do LOVE Christmas Vacation, especially now that I am slowly morphing into Clark Griswold. Bad Santa came out when I was in college, and I liked it then. But these days I have too much Christmas spirit to enjoy it, I guess. 🙂

I’m not a big fan of Christmas movies in general, but I do adore Love Actually! It’s been a few years since I’ve watched it, so it may be time to break out the DVD. 🙂

‘Love Actually’ is just too good 🙂 And Christmas is not playing the biggest role, it’s just there in the background 😀

I love Home Alone as a kid. Made me consider if I had the prowess to take on two criminals if left alone. Probably not.

Love, Actually is definitely up there with my favourite Christmas movies, but I think my top one is definitely The Holiday.
