Top Ten Tuesday: My Favourite TV Shows

hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

I am giving you something different again today. This list was HARD!

The Wire – After that, I could NOT go back to watching good old ‘CSI: Miami’ or similar shows. If I had to pick my all-time favourite, this would be it. Such a complex show, with memorable characters and storylines that seem so real. We get all perspectives – cops, drug dealers, lawyers – most of them corrupt and hungry for power. In ‘The Wire’ the good guys don’t always win. And you don’t have an almighty Horatio Caine who always solves the case and throws around one-liners, while a car is exploding in the background.

Six Feet Under – Without a doubt the BEST ending to a TV show I’ve ever seen. I still have to cry when I hear Sia’s ‘Breathe me’. What a great show, I was so invested in the characters – some of them I hated with a passion (Hey, Brenda!), some of them I loved to death and a lot of time my opinion changed over and over. They are all not perfect and that’s what makes me relate to them so well. Lots of dark humor and very emotional! Definitely worth it!

Deadwood – If you like lots of swearing, blood, gore and violence with a Western setting, there you go! Also, Ian McShane is absolutely stealing everyone’s spotlight in this! Lots of funny scenes as well.

Game of Thrones – You probably know by now, that I am a huge fan of the show. I always remember the time before it got the green light fondly. I just couldn’t believe it, I was SO HYPE! I looked at every snippet of information, stayed up late to watch the first trailer, tried to guess all of the actors and got excited by pictures of the setting or costumes. I never ever thought that GoT would become that successful. I always said, I would be happy if it doesn’t get cancelled before the Red Wedding πŸ˜€ And here we are, years later… and it’s the biggest show on the planet.

Rome – Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus- best BROMANCE! And Caesar is in it as well^^ Lots of sex, blood and violence. It IS HBO. Very character driven and I couldn’t stop watching. The end was rushed though, which was sad. I think they ran out of money or one of the sponsors dropped out.. Or both^^

Downton Abbey – Give me nice dresses, an early 19th century setting, and lots of DRAMA! It was addictive, most of the characters had great storylines and it was never boring!

South Park – It is my favourite cartoon. I love it so much and could watch certain episodes over and over. My boyfriend and I are always quoting it. Randy Marsh is my favourite character and I like his episodes most. Some great episodes are the Black Friday/Game of Thrones trilogy, Imaginationland and anything that has Mel Gibson. Also, R. Kelly and Tom Cruise are in the closet πŸ˜€

Buffy – I was obsessed with Buffy as a teenager and had a huge crush on Spike. Never Angel, I hated Angel^^.

Westworld – I wasn’t sure whether to put it on the list, because there’s only one season out yet. But it was so good, we were impressed! Great acting, story & setting! I especially liked the music & the opening, just beautiful!

Boardwalk Empire – takes place in Atlantic city in the 1920’s and 30’s. That means Prohibition Period, yay! I loved how great it looked, the 1920’s are a period I am very interested in anyways, so it was right up my alley. The show is pretty captivating, with lots of different characters with diverse social backgrounds. Steve Buscemi is the star of the show and he is doing great, but I was most impressed by the performance of Michael Shannon whom we get to know as a serious Prohibition agent. His development was something else. I also really liked Stephen Graham as Al Capone!

Also good: Vikings, Adventure Time, Another Period, The Shannara Chronicles, The X-Files, Family Guy, Rick & Morty, True Detective Season 1, True Blood, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad.

Which are your favourite TV shows?

  1. It is hard to believe Game of Thrones has taken over the TV world! I did watch a little bit of Deadwood. And Westworld I thought was really intriguing! I want to know more lol.

I need to watch Vikings. I’m a big fan of The 100 and 12 Monkeys (the show, not the movie, which I’ve never seen).

      1. The first few episodes definitely have some teenage drama vibes, but by mid- season it finds its footing and turns into much more of a post apocalyptic show. It’s got great characters too and gets fairly dark.

  2. My top three are The Wire, The Shield, and Friday Night Lights. I would have a hard time rounding out my top 10, though. I did really like Rome. Deadwood’s third season hurts it in my eyes (although I am in the minority who liked the ending). I LOVE that the biggest show on TV is fantasy, but I think GoT would fall outside of my top 10. It remains a deeply flawed show. My wife and I JUST started watching Westworld and we’re already smitten (we really need something to watch together besides The Walking Dead, a DEEPLY flawed show). David Simon’s new series The Deuce might – just might – come to rival The Wire (I loved Treme, but it never remotely rose to the level of The Wire).

    1. The Shield is my partner’s favourite show – I’ve never seen it but we definitely want to watch it together soon.

I realized I forgot to mention ‘The Walking Dead’ – a couple of years ago, maybe until the middle of season 4, it would have made the list.. we still watch it and are up to date but more annoyed than excited. Not even sure if we watch next season.

So did you start ‘The Deuce’ yet? We have been recording the episodes but haven’t watched any so far. If it’s great, we are looking forward to binge watching πŸ™‚

      1. Yeah, we’ve been watching each episode of The Deuce live. (This is a big deal. I continue to put up with The Walking Dead because it is the only show in forever my wife and I have been willing to sit down and watch together live season after season.)

  3. I gave up on The Wire because of the amount of swearing in the first two episodes. I don’t mind swearing for effect or if it is funny like in Game of Thrones but I’m afraid this was too much! Yes to Game of Thrones and Buffy! I liked a lot of the early stuff on South Park but haven’t watched it in the last few years. I plan to watch Downton Abbey at some point.

  4. I feel like I should watch the Wire at some point… but all the hype around it is honestly a little offputting πŸ˜‰ Definitely tempted by Deadwood too. And of course you know my love for GOT knows no bounds πŸ˜‰ SNAP WITH BUFFY- and of course I was one of those girls in love with Spike.
