I am currently working on a list of books I’ve read in my childhood and early teens. It was a whole lot and I am struggling to find or remember tons of titles, which is super sad! But it’s an ongoing process and I am hopeful I will remember more and more. I’d like to do a list of favourite books but I don’t have enough together yet so I give you authors I loved to read when I was a kid.
Otfried Preussler –> German author. Wrote my favourite book as a kid, Die kleine Hexe (The Little Witch). I read it over and over and over! And loved it every time. Other works of his include Krabat (The Satanic Mill) or Das kleine Gespenst (The Little Ghost).
Astrid Lindgren –> a Swedish author, VERY popular in Germany, I grew up with her books and movie adaptations. My favourite book series (and TV shows) are Pippi Langstrumpf (Pippi Longstocking), Michel aus Loenneberga (no English translation, ‘Emil i Loenneberga’), the books about Lotta (no English translation) and Kinder aus Bullerbue (Six Bullerby Children). Other famous works of her are The Brothers Lionheart or Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter.
Bonnie Bryant –> Horse books and more horse books. I was totally into them when I was little, although I never even went riding! I just loved reading about riding clubs etc. Bryant wrote a series called The Saddle Club and I think I read them all.
Marie Louise Fischer –> German author. Between the 50s up until her death in 2005 she published hundreds of books, mostly romances. I loved her boarding school novels, like Ulrike im Internat, which was originally published in the 60s.
Enid Blyton –> more boarding school books! The Twins at St. Clare’s was my favourite series, I read it soo often! Would even reread today! They were just so happy 😀 The only problem the kids had was teachers finding out they got out of bed at night, aww!
Tina Caspari –> German author. Wrote tons of books, lots of them about horses, dancing or coming of age. My favourite was her series about a young girl in which each book covers one year of her life, starting from when she was 11 and ending when she is 17.
Thomas Brezina –> Austrian author. Wrote the Tiger Team books (A Case for You and the Tiger-Team). A series about a young group of detectives uncovering mysterious cases^^ The cool thing about these books was the fact that YOU had to solve riddles and mysteries yourself. I must have read almost all of them I think.
Erich Kaestner –> famous German author. My favourites were Emil und die Detektive (Emil and the Detectives), Das doppelte Lottchen (Lottie and Lisa) or Puenktchen und Anton (no translation).
R.L. Stine –> I LOVED the Goosebumps books in my early teens! Read tons of them, they were really scary for me back then 😀
Brigitte Blobel –> German author. She wrote this ballet dancer series about a girl called Sarah, I absolutely loved. It was a bit darker than what I was used to and I re-read it again in my 20s.
Annette Langen –> German author. Lovely book series (Briefe von Felix) about a toy rabbit called Felix who gets lost and starts traveling the world & sending letters to his owner Sophie. The letters are included every couple of pages. So you follow Sopie’s life at home as well as Felix’s travels. It was awesome!
Do you know any of those? What were your favourite childhood authors or books?
