Isabella Swan’s move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have
been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife-between desire and danger.

I know this book gets enough hate already.. but I need to add to it. Thanks for turning me off the whole Vampire Genre, Twilight! Thank you for starting a wave of softy vampire romances, for turning the once feared and dangerous beast into a whiny, weak & angsty mess. And for encouraging the Mary Sue & Gary Stu movement.
The book was just lame. The start consists of describing how pretty Edward is.. over and over and over… I wanted to throw up. And then there’s nothing he can’t do. He’s good at everything. How very boring! You can still get away with saying that he’s more than a hundred years old and had time to learn a bunch of things.. but then.. didn’t he also have the time to become wise & grown-up? AND NOT ACT LIKE A TEENAGER?
Nah, it sucked.
In a family torn apart by poverty and violence, Hekat is no more than an unwanted
mouth to feed, worth only a few coins from a passing slave trader.
But Hekat was not born to be a slave. For her, a different path has been chosen.
It is a path that will take her from stinking back alleys to the house of her God, from blood-drenched battlefields to the glittering palaces of Mijak.
This is the story of Hekat, precious and beautiful.
Godspeaker by Karen Miller

- The Riven Kingdom
- Hammer of God
This is the story of Hekat, a girl who gets sold into slavery and ends up being one of the most powerful people in Mijak. Hekat is not your average girl though. The moment she gets sold as a slave, her owner sees something special in her and lets her live in luxury. Something she never experienced and something that marks the beginning of her turning into an arrogant bitch. Hekat is definitely not a character you are supposed to like. She claims that she can hear the voice of god, something only a few people can, and therefore has the power to smite people.
Believe me, there’s a lot of smiting going on. Hekat is an evil Mary Sue. She’s super ambitious, ruthless, loves killing and turns out to be a great warrior as well. She doesn’t seem to have feelings for anyone and her whole life is led by the voice of god. She doesn’t question what the almighty god asks of her, but follows faithfully.
There’s lots of blood, gore, rape and violence in general, so be warned. Not a bad book, but in the end it didn’t impress me enough to pick up the second part.
In a steel-and-lead encased bunker a Special Forces soldier waits on his final orders.
On the surface a bacterium has turned 90% of the population into hyper-aggressive predators.
Now Captain Lee Harden must leave the bunker and venture into the wasteland to rekindle a shattered America.

Book 1: The Remaining
Book 2: The Remaining: Aftermath
Book 3: The Remaining: Refugees
Book 4: The Remaining: FracturedBook 5: The Remaining: AllegianceBook 6: The Remaining: Extinction
This one was alright. But only that. It’s very short and doesn’t have a lot of character development or any deep storylines. It’s action, gun-talk, killing Zombies and trying to survive. Entertaining, but not enough to make me want to read another one.
You read more of Twilight than I did! I got something like 3 chapters in and knew it wasn’t for me! Great list. 🙂

Haha, thank you!
I took part in a read along in 2008 I think. It’s easier to get through a bad book when you are reading it with a bunch of people.

Wimp! I made it through New Moon 😀
Miller’s stuff was very hit and miss for me. More misses though, so I ended up not bothering with any by her.

You are the real hero 😀
I think I won’t try more of Miller’s work either. All of the other books don’t sound so interesting to me anyways.
I will read your DHG post now 🙂

Ahh Twilight ruined vampires for me too!!! And don’t worry- the series doesn’t get any better- it’s a good call to quit while you’re “ahead”. Great post!!

I don’t read a lot of zombie books but I will if they get good enough reviews or word of mouth. I guess I’ll skip over
The Remaining series…

Much as I like reading post-apocalyptic stories, very few of them can be compared to what I consider their “progenitor”, Stephen King’s The Stand: that one did not need blood, gore and senseless violence to be a great book…

The Stand is awesome! I am still trying to find similar works but it’s not so easy unfortunately.. do you have any suggestions? 🙂

The first title that comes to mind is Robert McCammon’s SWAN SONG, I found it was just as powerful and captivating. I hope you enjoy it 🙂
