While I think it is not bad writing or a bad idea, this series is just not for me. It couldn’t get me excited. But I think a lot of younger people would love and enjoy it. It’s a bit like Harry Potter. Without the magic school. I swear, if there was a magic school, I probably would have liked it. The whole plot was alright, it did have a solution so you are not left with an open ending. But it just made me feel indifferent. It’s one of those ‘meh’-books. And the series is super long, so nope, thanks. Give it to your kids though. 12-13 year olds will probably enjoy it!

acaciaWelcome to Acacia . . .
Born into generations of prosperity, the four royal children of the Akaran dynasty know little of the world outside their opulent island paradise. But when an assassin strikes at the heart of their power, their lives are changed forever.
Forced to flee to distant corners and separated against their will, the children must navigate a web of hidden allegiances, ancient magic, foreign invaders, and illicit trade that will challenge their very notion of who they are. As they come to understand their true purpose in life, the fate of the world lies in their hands.

Acacia by David A. Durham

  1. The War with the Mein
  2. The Other Lands
  3. The Sacred Band

This started out great. I thought the first book was really good and epic! It follows the 4 Akaran kids who are on the run after their dad got murdered and follow completely different paths. It’s fun, captivating, the world is awesome, there’s so much betrayal and backstabbing, great fighting scenes, clever plotting and lots of secrets and surprises. Also, magic. And bad guys who are more grey than black. Lots of characters you can feel for and I thought it set up nicely for the second book.

Unfortunately that was very disappointing. I wrote a review here.

pawnLong ago, the Storyteller claimed, in this first book of THE BELGARIAD, the evil god Torak drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.
But Garion did not believe in such stories. Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved–but did not know…?

Belgariad Saga by David Eddings

  1. Pawn of Prophecy
  2. Queen of Sorcery
  3. Magician’s Gambit
  4. Castle of Wizardry
  5. Enchanters’ End Game

Not the right time for me to read it. I am sure I would have liked it more when I was a kid. I wrote a little bit about it here.

      1. I gave it 3 Stars. It was much like the first book in that I had a hard time getting into it but once I did, it went smoothly.
Here’s a quote from my review:

“I found it very uplifting to see the author portraying characters who deliberately broke their cycles of violence and hate and reforged circles of love and hope. Just when you thought someone was a complete badguy, they change, are redeemed and make things better.”
